Saint Joseph/Old Mission San Jose newsletter Aug 14
Dear Saint Joseph Family in Christ,
Welcome to Saint Joseph/Old Mission San Jose and our weekly communication newsletter. I invite you to embrace and share these messages with your family and friends.
The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold. Psalm 45
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast day in honor of the Blessed Mother is very close to my heart. I would like to take this opportunity to share my personal feelings with you.
Mary is my mother and our mother because she is the mother of our Lord. We as the church (Universal Church) are Christ’s body. In the spiritual order, we belong to her as children since she remains the mother of the One who calls us brothers and sisters by adoption. I have a personal love for her as I adopted Mary as my mother when my mother died.
The devotion to Mary has been an indispensable part of the church’s history and spiritual heritage. Thanks to Mary we have Christ and thanks to her we will come to Him again and again. She is a sure path for God’s children to come to God because she wants Heaven for all of us. The holy rosary is the summary of our faith. As we meditate with her on the mysteries of her Son's incarnation, suffering and death, resurrection, and ascension to Heaven, we enter into the life of Heaven and draw graces from the Wellspring of Love. Mary is good for Jesus. Mary is good for us.
I pray my personal reflection gives you a window into my soul and can help you better understand my purpose and mission here at Saint Joseph and in the greater sense, on earth, as we work together in carrying out the master plan already determined and laid out by our heavenly Father.
As we shared at the State of the Parish Meeting, we commit to build our community stronger as we embrace the Mission of the Church. After consulting with the Liturgy Core Team and those involved in the Family of Faith Ministry, we propose the following changes to the Sunday Mass schedule. Our new schedule will begin effective the weekend of September 11-12, 2021.
- Saturday:
- 5:30 PM – Mission Church
- Sunday
- 8:00 AM – Mission Church
- 10:00 AM – Main Church
- 12:00 PM – Main Church – Mass with Family of Faith
- 3:00 PM – Mass in Vietnamese
- 5:00 PM – Mass in Chinese
- 7:00 PM – Mission Church – Mass with Youth, Confirmation, and Young Adults
- Historically, Sunday Mass participation before and during the Covid-19 pandemic substantially reduced to less than 1000 people at all Masses. The most attended Masses (11:00 am and 3:00 pm) are not even at 200 attendees which is 50% below the main church’s capacity. The 5:30 pm and 7:30 am Masses are at about 100 attendees each. The Mission church will comfortably accommodate more than 200 people.
- The beautiful Mission is underutilized as a beautiful, holy, and historic place of worship. We believe it is good for us to celebrate our Lord in the Mission church. It is not just a historic place, but also a living and breathing spiritual ground for evangelization.
- We change the Mass times because we need at least two hours between Masses for the following reasons:
- Better traffic flow before and after each Mass.
- More time for lay and ordained ministers to prepare for each Mass without rushing.
- More time for the choir to practice and people to pray the Holy Rosary before Mass.
- More time to prepare and facilitate hospitality after each Mass.
- Since Family of Faith Ministry takes place on Sunday, we need time for parents, children, and helpers to celebrate, learn, and share.
We understand these changes will cause some inconvenience and adjustments. We ask for your understanding and sacrifice. We believe that with these new schedules we will better celebrate, learn, and share our faith. We thank you for your support and understanding.
For further questions and concerns, please contact me and the Liturgy Team.
We congratulate and extend a very warm welcome to our new Pastoral Leadership Team: Bill Utic, Lisa Dang, Mike Gaffey, and Denise Lai. This team will play an important role and be instrumental in our Saint Joseph vision and mission moving forward. Thank you all for accepting this appointment. Your support and leadership are critical to the success of our future plans and goals.
We are excited to unveil and present Saint Joseph Family of Faith Ministry under the leadership of Sister Bernadette Nguyen, L.H.C., Grace Lichauco, and our Youth Director, Jimmy Jiminez-Garcia. Yours in Christ,
(Family of Faith Ministry
Ministry House 2 (289 St. Joseph Terrace, Fremont)
St. Joseph Church Youth Ministry:
http://old.saintjosephmsj.org/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Youth+Ministry
http://old.saintjosephmsj.org/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Family+of+Faith+Overview。
